Association football terminology Essay Soccer also known as football in Europe, It is only known as soccer in the United States and in Canada everywhere else it is known as football. It is a very popular sport and it is played between two teams both with eleven players. Over 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world’s most popular sport, played the game. The game is played on a very large rectangular field of grass or it can also be played on artificial turf. There is a goal box in the middle of each of the short ends. The goal of the game is to score by kicking the ball into the opposing goal. Soccer has many nicknames such as â€Å"The beautiful game† and â€Å"The World Game†. The game is played by all ages from children to adults. In general play, the goalies are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands while the field players are to use their feet to kick the ball, sometimes using other parts of their legs, their torso, or their head. Players have different roles in the team. There are forwards who attack and score goals. There are defenders who help to defend the goal. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the game wins. If in the end the game were to end in a tie either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time or a penalty shootout, depending on type of competition. The World Cup is the most famous soccer championship. It is held every four years. Teams from many countries of the world compete with each other, and millions of people around the world watch the game on television at that time. It is a very competitive kind of sports that is why it is interesting to watch it. Soccer is even in the Olympics Each team consists of a maximum of eleven players not including substitutes, one of whom must be the goalkeeper. Goalkeepers are the only players allowed to play the ball with their hands or arms, provided they do so within the penalty area in front of their own goal. The basic kit players are required to wear includes a shirt, shorts, socks, footwear and also shin guards. Headgear is not a required piece of basic equipment but there are many famous players today may choose to wear it to protect themselves from head injury. A number of players may be replaced by substitutes during the course of the game. The maximum number of substitutions permitted in most competitive international and domestic league games is three, though the permitted number may vary in other competitions such as friendly games. Common reasons for a substitution include injury, tiredness, ineffectiveness, a tactical switch, or substitutions are used for time wasting at the end of a finely poised game. In standard adult matches, a player who has been substituted may not take further part in a match. A match is not allowed to continue if there are fewer than seven players in either team. A game is officiated by a referee who has full authority over the entire match and whose decisions are final. The referee is assisted by two assistant referees. In soccer there can be consequences for hurting a player. And it is known as a foul, a foul occurs when a player commits an offence while the ball is in play. Handling the ball deliberately, tripping an opponent, or pushing an opponent, are considered as fouls. They are therefore punished by a direct free kick or penalty kick depending on where the foul occurred. Other fouls are punishable by an indirect free kick. The referee may punish a player with a caution also known as yellow card or a dismissal also known as a red card. A player can also receive two yellow cards in the same game which result in the player getting a red card, and therefore to a dismissal. A player given a yellow card also it is called being â€Å"booked†, the referee writes down the players name in his official notebook. If a player has been expelled from the game there can be no substitute that can be brought on in their place. You can receive a card at any time during the game. Soccer has fairly simple rules however it is still a difficult game to play. It is a highly strategic game that requires logical thinking, quick reaction and endurance as it is necessary to run without a rest for a long time.

Ellisons Invisible Man: Invisibility, Vision, and Identity as Motifs E

Ralph Ellison incorporates many symbols into this novel, each providing a unique perspective on the narrative and supporting the themes of invisibility, vision and identity. These themes can many times generally symbolize the strength of the subconscious mind. In this novel I think that there are several visions that symbolize the narrator’s escape from reality, seeking comfort in memories of his childhood or times at the college, often occurring as he fades into his music. Ellison coincidences dreams and reality to redefine the surrealistic nature of the narrator’s experience and to showcase the differences between the realities of black life and the myth of the American dream. ? One thing I saw a lot of in this novel is people willfully looking past instead of confronting the truth. The narrator repeatedly states people’s inability to see what they don’t want to see, their inability to see what their prejudice doesn’t allow them to see, has pushed him into a life of effective invisibility. But prejudice against others is not the only kind of blindness in the book. Many characters also don’t acknowledge truths about themselves or their communities, and this refusal is shown in the imagery of vision and invisibility. For example, the boys who fight in the â€Å"battle royal† wear blindfolds, symbolizing their powerlessness to recognize their corruption at the hands of the white men. The Founder’s statue at the college has empty eyes, signifying his failure to see the racist realities. Blindness also afflicts Rev Homer A. Barbee, who romanticizes the Founder, and Brother Jack, who is missing an eye which he conceals by wearing a glass eye. The narrator himself experiences blindness, such as in chapter sixteen when he addresses the ... ...judices of others. He has followed the ideology of the college and the ideology of the Brotherhood without trusting or developing his own identity. Now, however, he has realized that his own identity, both in its flexibility and authenticity, is the key to freedom. Rinehart, a master of many identities, first suggests to the narrator the limitless capacity for variation within oneself. However, Rinehart ultimately proves an unsatisfactory model for the narrator because Rinehart’s life lacks authenticity. The meaning of the narrator’s assertion that he is â€Å"an invisible man† has changed slightly since he made the same claim at the beginning of the novel: whereas at the outset he means to call attention to the fact that others cannot not see him, he now means to call attention to the fact that his identity, his inner self, is real, even if others cannot see it.

Acting a Scene From the ”’Crucible”’ Essay

Near the end of the work on the play ‘The Crucible’ I have been working in a group consisting of Kerry, Claire, Kirsty, Hayley, and myself. We were somewhat limited about what scene we could act out, as the size of our group was so large. The scene we choose had mixed emotions and high suspicions on certain characters. We believed that with this mix of emotions and actions it would allow us to present a highly effective and realistic piece of drama. The start of our piece is kicked off by the appearance of Mr Hale. Hale, tells Elizabeth and proctor news about Elizabeth’s name being associated with witchcraft in court. The scene soon turns to backstabbing and high emotions. The whole scene is about the ease at which rumours and stories spread and, due to the time period it is set, there is no evidence needed to put someone into court, especially, when it comes to witchcraft. Their house is effectively searched for things that could prove witchcraft. I played two very contrasting roles; the first role I play is that of Francis. This role is relatively short. Francis is complaining about the fact that his wife has been taken to jail. The second role I played was that off Cheever, a court clerk. Cheever comes into the scene to take Elizabeth to jail. This in its self causes much tension in the scene. It was tricky to act two very contrasting roles, but I had valuable input from my group about the way I should speak and the way my body language was. This helped me a lot and I think I managed to create two very contrasting characters. The scene was all set in one room so we had to make sure there was enough movement to keep the audiences interested. The group took many suggestions from each other to help the scene be more effective and appear more complete. The issue of me defining two separate characters was one of the main talking points with many helpful ideas being put forward. Another main talking point was Kerry’s body language. There were a lot of ideas put forward throughout the group, which Kerry took on board, and her character improved as a result of this. One of my main problems was getting off stage when Francis left, and then returning in a completely different character only seconds later. I achieved this by just taking my tie off so to at least show a visual difference. My first line as Cheever was, â€Å"Good evening to you Mr Proctor.† In the stage notes this was supposed to achieve a shocked silence. I tried to achieve this by saying it quietly but forcefully. This along with a sudden hush on stage made this bit one of my favourite pieces of drama in the particular piece. Evaluation I think that our overall performance was good. I felt that we worked well as a group, discussing our problems without tension rising. I felt the everyone took on board ideas and suggestions from everyone in the group. I think this showed in our final performance. I feel it would have been even better if we had been as focused on the work in every lesson. I still feel that I could have distinguished my character more successfully if I could have achieved a better voice difference from the two characters. However I felt that my body language as well as costume helped distinguish my two characters very successfully. I felt that if I had learned my lines more thourghouly I would have felt far more confident on stage. The rest of my group, I felt, performed very well, using facial expressions and vocal expressions very successfully. I found that Kerry in particular was very effective, as she had to play the part of a man, which added a whole new set of problems to her. I think that if we were to act this scene again I would have tried to put in more movement on stage and I would have made sure that my back was facing away from the audience as much as possible. However saying this I felt we used the space we had well and I think that when we choose to sit down the position of our chairs on stage was very effective.
